A lovely little lady I recently rediscovered, stashed away with some other childhood treasures. Mom made these for us, my older sister and I, when we were kids, using our old cotton anklets and fabric left over from the dresses she sewed for us. They all had names — some I even remember 50+ years later — and often hitched a ride to school or a playdate in a pocket, purse, or lunchbox. This is Melissa. She was thrilled to join Carol & me for breakfast last Saturday. I was thrilled to have her along! #memoriesofmom

The latter were just the “new” prop I brought to draw; #thenewking is what came to mind instead once the pencils were sharpened. Thanks, as always, @susanolinsky for the fun Zoom — theme, hosting, and the fab soundtrack. #whatsnewpussycat ❤️

Recent addition to the household to keep the gnome dudes happy. Next Tuesday’s theme: “New.” No clue yet what I’ll bring to draw. (Any ideas…?)

A few of the images I created for Tampa Bay Water, a regional utility, who celebrated their 20th anniversary with a special 18-month illustrated calendar. Since their mission is to not just provide clean & safe drinking water today but for years to come, a big part of their story and focus is on the environment. Which means I not only got to draw pipes and water — which I love doing — but Florida flora & fauna — a real treat! Thank you for the photos (& the super fun project), Glenn & Kaye @designeratlargetampa

Wonky plates, I know. Didn’t try too hard to get them “right.” Felt good just to grab the #prismacolors & draw at @susanolinsky (& friends’) #sketchnight last night on Zoom. I always love seeing what everyone else brings to draw, and the sketches that result. That’s maybe the best part. That and the friendly camaraderie. And the themed Spotify soundtracks that Susan sets up. (Last week, for Fat Tuesday & a Mardi Gras theme, we were sketching to Zydeco.)❤️ Theo wanted in on the reference shot just now but did not hang out with us last night, except to walk across the desk a couple of times, lift his tail and moon the camera. (The apple was delicious btw.)

Just getting around to posting this assignment from late summer on the whole #ghostkitchen trend. If not today, then when? Happy Halloween! (Headline/layout by the supremely talented @locascioanne — such a pleasure to work with!)

Fun Sketch Night @susanolinsky — drawing flea market finds. These are tiny Dresden Porcelains I found at a thrift store a few years back. They’re place card holders, of all things. See last photo for scale.

I recently partnered with @twoxfouragency and @wintrust to create illustrations for a 3-sided mural for @rmhccni — a wonderful organization that supports families with critically ill children. ❤️ The #wintrustmural building is located on Ashland Avenue alongside the Kennedy Expressway. A different non-profit is highlighted via artwork roughly every 6 weeks. If you’re in the Chicago area, you can catch this one “live” through 9/30/21. Photo credit: Robert Mickolayck

For last night’s Sketch Night theme, “Weather.” @susanolinsky I was at a loss for ideas, but loved the suggestion of drawing prisms (for rainbows) that came in over on Facebook right before. Thanks Tricia! (I didn’t have any prisms handy to draw from, of course, or rainbows — it was thundering like mad outside — so made do with the images in my head.)

It’s #sketchnight again tonight hosted by @susanolinsky. I had great fun drawing radishes, zinnias and nectarines last week, both during and after our Zoom. (I like to redraw at least one of my messy pencil sketches later in #adobeillustrator as shown here, just for the heck of it.) Tonight the theme is weather. No idea yet what props I’ll dig up to draw…Suggestions very welcome!

Curious…Which color(s) do you use up first in your art supply arsenal? For me these days it seems to be a warm red & yellow, a pale blue and a cool lavender. I didn’t even think about these as being favorite colors, but I guess they must be! (When I was 6, it was a lone black crayon worn down to a tiny nub. And I remember feeling super put-out when a classmate asked to borrow it: What the hell was he thinking?) At any rate, getting ready here for next Tuesday’s Sketch Night, a live Zoom hosted by @susanolinsky It’s been too long since I attended, and it’s always great fun! You can sign up too, if so inclined. It’s whatever media you like. A theme is suggested, but draw what you want. All levels, no judgment, good vibes, and a bargain to boot. Check out “workshops” on her website susanolinsky.com Maybe see you there…

Let me start by saying, I’m 100% fine now. It’s been just over a year since I started treatment for Stage 3 endometrial cancer, and about 7 months since treatment ended. I didn’t post about it while it was happening, as I continued to take assignments during that time, and I didn’t want to discourage any clients from calling. (I’m sure my fellow freelancers — and my clients, too —can understand!) I just had my 2nd cancer-free checkup and my energy is nearly back to what it was (except when it comes to housework). I understand that my #chemocurls may take up to 2 years to fully grow out, however. Which gives me plenty of time to get used to having ringlets, I guess! At any rate, it beats being bald. 😉 I’m posting about this now because I know I appreciated every scrap of info from personal experience that I could get my hands on going into treatment, during, and afterwards, especially from people I knew. (Which is to say, I’m happy to field any/all questions, if anyone has any, here or via DM. Or if anyone just wants to share what their own experience has been, I’d love to know.) Hoping all of you out there are #happyandwell meanwhile, regardless of what journey you’re on. My very best wishes to all! ❤️ #howispentmypandemic #cancerfree
